Rosh Hashanah Second Day: Contemplative Morning Service

Torah Study and Contemplative Service

with Nan Gefen, Jeffrey Kessler, Janet Falk, Eric Strellis, Miriam Smolover
at Chochmat HaLev, 2215 Prince St. Berkeley, CA 94705

Schedule:

10:00 am | Torah Study
11:00 am | Contemplative Service

Join us for torah study and a contemplative morning service on the 2nd Day of Rosh Hashanah, for an opportunity to have the meaning and prayers of these Holy Days to sink in even deeper.

Torah Study:  10am.  Eric Strellis will lead us in reading and discussing the Akedah (the Binding of Isaac), which is the traditional reading for 2nd Day.

Contemplative 2nd Day Service:   11am.  Jeffrey Kessler and Janet Falk will lead us in a contemplative morning service with alternating periods of chant and meditation.  In honor of Chochmat HaLev’s contemplative roots on its 30th Anniversary, founding member Nan Gefen will give the drash (teaching)

After the service, we will make Kiddush, and then enjoy a potluck lunch.  Chochmat will provide a few nourishing and tasty options, but please bring a potluck item to share!

After lunch, Jewish Meditation Teacher and Chant Master Miriam Smolover will be offering a workshop to round out the day. In this meditation session, we will experience a traditional Jewish meditation practice of embodying Yod Hey Vav Hey and a contemporary practice of embodying Shechina.

Chazak v’Ya’ametz Libecha —
Courage and Resilience for Turbulent Times

In a world marked by uncertainty and overwhelm, the High Holy Days are an opportunity to be held by community, fill our cups with spiritual sustenance, and fortify our hearts for the challenges ahead. Don’t settle for rote performance or empty ritual this year. Join us at Chochmat HaLev to peel back the layers of the traditional liturgy to find meaning for our lives today. Make our sacred texts come alive in new and provocative ways. Allow our soulful music to open your heart and release what no longer serves you. Deepen your connection to Spirit by transcending outdated and dissonant notions of the Divine. Create deep bonds with a community that welcomes you in your full complexity.
