Followed by HeartSpace at 8pm with author Jonathan Branfman, discussing his book Millennial Jewish Stars: Navigating Racial Antisemitism, Masculinity, and White Supremacy. Jonathan Branfman researches how Jewish performers embody race, gender, and sexuality in U.S. popular media, including digital media like YouTube. His work invites Jewish, feminist, queer, critical race, and media studies to grasp how historical antisemitism shapes present-day U.S. visual culture, and how Jewish stars harness this stigma to enter America’s core cultural debates. For instance, the Black Jewish rap superstar Drake must reconcile clashing stigmas of Jewish emasculation and Black hypermasculinity. And although Drake presents many different masculinities, all his personae embody U.S. disputes about hip hop itself as an oft-vilified Black art form. Drake is one of six stars analyzed in Jonathan’s book, Millennial Jewish Stardom: Masculinity, Racial Minstrelsy, & Queer Glamor, forthcoming in 2024 from New York University Press.  Click here for Jonathan’s full Bio. Torah Study
9:30 am
Saturdays, 9:30 – 11amwith Eric Strellis Join on  Zoom It is a tree of life to all who take hold of it, and whoever keeps hold of it is happy; its ways are ways of pleasantness, and all its paths are peace.  – Proverbs 3:17-18 If Torah is our Tree of Life, where are its roots, how does it flower, what does its fruit taste like? Answers to these questions, and more, are revealed to us every week when we study together. Engaging with Torah allows us to access an Eternal Wisdom that often seems intimidating, hidden and unreachable. Explore the parsha, the week’s Torah portion, with a warm, supportive, questioning community.  Together, we luxuriate in the specialness of Shabbat, delving deeply into the text. We read the entire parsha aloud in English and see where the discussion leads us.  Prior experience with the text is not required as we read it again, together, for the first time. Join us and deepen your connection to Torah, Shabbat, and Jewish community. Everyone is welcome, every voice is valued. For more information, please reach out to Eric Strellis at eric@chochmat.org. But the story of the Jewish people continues and the book of Nevi’im, or Prophets: For those of you who love a good story, maybe even hero and anti-hero themes, you are in luck. Our readings chronicle the story of the Israelites in the promised land and the challenges they face.  It is truly amazing that the Divine One has put up with all this! Come explore these fascinating texts with us on every 2nd Thursday of the month at 7pm. The text can be found on Sefaria Never again did there arise in Israel a prophet like Moses…. Deut. 34:1″ , ...

10:00 am - 1:30 pm
Due to a family emergency, this weekend’s Chochmat Amazing Race has been ** POSTPONED **. Please watch for an announcement about a future date in the spring. —————————–   Before our Community Weaver, Brittany worked at Chochmat,  she spent 10 years designing magical and meaningful experiences to support connection and community. She designed Princeton’s entire freshman orientation and HBO’s Season 6 premiere experience.  (And hundreds more!)  She is thrilled to get folks excited and pumped to participate in this day of joy, play and connection.     Register here! Amazing Race is the title of the event, but there is NO RUNNING involved.  That’s just a reference to a very popular adventure style tv show.  There is however WALKING involved in about a 5 block radius. If you are concerned about walking for the 90 minutes of game play, please let me know. I have many other roles available so you can still participate.  COVID ProtocolsOur policy effective May 19th, 2023 is as follows:Chochmat HaLev, in consultation with our medical advisor and based on community survey results, will discontinue masking requirements for attendance at events.
