Klezmer Music of the Early Revival

with Margot Leverett
Sunday, September 13 @ 11am

in collaboration with KlezCalifornia
Registration opens in September. Check the KlezCalifornia site for more info.

Margot Leverett will share her experience from the early days of the klezmer revival when she studied with clarinetists like Sid Beckerman and Max Epstein. Sid and Max, and other musicians of that era, helped bridge the gap between early klezmer from the 1920s and 30s and the revival in the 80s.  She will discuss style and ornamentation of mid-century klezmer and teach a few tunes from their repertoire, and also share her experience combining klezmer and Bluegrass in her band, Margot Leverett and Klezmer Mountain Boys.

Margot Leverett is one of the foremost clarinetists of the klezmer revival. Leverett was a founding member of the Klezmatics in 1985 before moving on to start her own band “Margot Leverett and the Klezmer Mountain Boys”, combining klezmer and bluegrass.  She has been a soloist with the Philadelphia Orchestra, toured with the NY Ragtime Orchestra, and taught klezmer at workshops all over the world. Her current project, “Duke City Hora,” is based in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
