Havdalah Dance Jam!

Havdalah offers us the chance to mark the transition from Shabbat, a time of rest, into activity. This is an evening that celebrates the kinetic spirit of Chochmat Halev with joyful movement that will lead us out of Shabbat and into the bustle of our week. Through our collective energy and sweat we will invigorate the ritual of Havdalah with vibrant physicality.

Besides having a fun, shared experience, the goal of this evening is to introduce attendees to the ways in which we can use dance and movement as a lens to look at Torah and deepen our connections to Jewish spirituality. It will unfold in 3 parts: a facilitated conversation based on a selected Jewish text, Havdalah led by a member of the Chochmat community, and an hour of easy-to-follow dancing led by Amie Segal.

This program is designed for experiential learners seeking to connect Jewish spirituality with embodied practice—those who want to cultivate and develop an understanding of the body that aligns with their Jewish values. Movers of all levels are welcome!

• Wear comfortable clothing you can move in.

• Eat dinner beforehand, snacks provided
.
• Bring a water bottle.

• Kids are allowed with supervision and if the maturity level is appropriate.

Amie Segal is the founder of The Living Room, a Los Angeles based organization that hosts lively evenings of movement and dance that weave together Jewish ritual and thought. She created The Living Room to explore the idea of embodied Judaism—how a physical practice can build deeper connections that uplift Jewish spirituality. Amie has led Jewish movement programming for various LA Jewish institutions including IKAR, East Side Jews, SIJCC, Open Temple, NuRoots and Nefesh. She recently earned her Doctorate in Physical Therapy from CSUN. Her writing on movement and Judaism has been published in The Forward and the Jewish Journal.
