Josh Kornbluth — an acclaimed storyteller and one of the funniest men in Berkeley — will screen his film Red Diaper Baby as a fundraiser for Chochmat HaLev. Red Diaper Baby had an off-Broadway run and was nominated for a Drama Desk Award before it was filmed for the Sundance Channel. It tells the story of Josh’s youth when he was being carefully groomed to lead the next American Revolution. (The Communist one, that is.)

And Josh tried, he really did. Under the tutelage of his father — who woke him up every morning by belting out The Internationale — Josh attempted to organize the “masses” among his kindergarten classmates. This didn’t work out for some reason, so as a young man, Josh traveled to Russia to learn more. To his dismay, his Soviet counterparts were more interested in his blue jeans than his Red politics.

In a mash-up that only Josh could concoct, the story then careens from Communist-organizing escapades to Josh’s sexual awakening, and his awkward attempts to understand orgasms in terms of political theory. If you can’t quite picture how this worked out, you’ll have to join us for Red Diaper Baby. It is guaranteed to make you forget anything and everything that has happened before, or since.

Red Diaper Baby was filmed during a live performance (back when there was such thing as live theater). The New York Daily News called the film “Hilarious!” and the Washington Post opined: ”Fresh, funny, smart and tender.”

You don’t have to be Jewish to love Josh, and you don’t have to be a member of Chochmat to sign up for this live screening.
