Chochmat HaLev is a thriving Jewish spiritual community in Berkeley, CA, known for our welcoming and inclusive approach, high-energy musical prayer services, deep meditation and contemplative offerings, and wide range of classes and programs that offer meaningful spiritual experiences. We are seeking to hire a Part-Time Children and Family Educator to help nurture and grow our next generation of spiritual seekers.

We are looking for someone to design and lead a new program for children in Grades 3-5 that is joyful, inspiring, and engaging – an age-appropriate education in Chochmat’s unique approach to Jewish spirituality. This person will primarily teach Hebrew language, Torah, Jewish holidays, and rituals. The teacher will be working closely with our B’Mitzvah teacher to ensure alignment of our educational programming. This program will also serve as the next step from our Chavurah family-based program for children ages 2-7. The program will meet two hours per week, either on a weeknight or weekend.

Our Educator will also have the opportunity to lead children and family programs on Shabbat and Jewish holidays (for additional compensation).

Who we’re looking for:

  • You Are an Engaging Educator: You have experience developing and implementing creative, experiential, dynamic, fun, and innovative learning experiences. You have solid experience teaching students of elementary-school age in a formal or informal setting. You are committed to fostering a nurturing and inclusive learning environment that encourages student participation.
  • You Are Passionate about Judaism: You have a deep understanding of Jewish tradition and culture. You have experience in Jewish education and have an informed perspective about effective approaches for fostering children’s love for Judaism. You are committed to promoting Hebrew language proficiency and Jewish values.
  • You Are Entrepreneurial: You have their own vision for this new program, aligned with Chochmat Halev’s approach to Jewish spirituality. You have experience creating new programs from scratch.  You are self-starting and can operate relatively autonomously with minimal day-to-day oversight. You can bring your energy and enthusiasm to help recruit students for the program.
  • You Are Collaborative: You have strong communication and consensus-building skills. You have demonstrated ability  to work well with parents, community leadership, staff, and volunteers to achieve shared goals.
  • You Are Organized: You are detail-oriented and responsible. You have demonstrated ability to juggle multiple tasks and manage schedules.  Things rarely fall through the cracks.
