Yom Kippur is a day to honor the beauty of our tradition as a pathway to healing the world, and our own Jewish hearts. Sefardic Jewish families have ancestors that came from Spain or Portugal. Sephardic Jews were forcibly displaced from their homes in 1492 and carried their beautiful traditions with them throughout the world. Learn how one Sefardic Jew, Flory Jagoda, teaches us a way to find the key to our Jewish heart. Join Rabbi Lynn and friends for the telling of this story, songs, and ceremony in honor of Yom Kippur.
You are invited to wear white, a prayer shawl, and to take off your shoes! We will pray in our bare feet as our ancestors did. Bring a yartzeit candle and a holy day candle to light in memory of a family ancestor. You’ll be invited to write their names in the chat.
Home Based Activities for Yom Kippur to support Jewish life and community
- Prepare memory candles for the holy day in honor of deceased members of the family and tell a story about them. We light these candles at the beginning of Yom Kippur
- Read The Key from Spain: Flory Jagoda and Her Music by Debbie Levy. You can order this book from afikomen.org
- Hevruta Activity: Bring a special Jewish book or ritual object, or song/prayer, family custom that a Jewish elder gifted to you. Share the story with your hevruta partners.
- Yom Kippur Home Service for Families and Friends – You can adapt this half-hour service to your family needs. This is a great year to invite extended family to a brief ceremony.
