Chochmat HaLev is seeking two creative, dynamic, and experienced educators to join the teaching team of Torat HaLev, our youth learning program. Our school launched two years ago with a class for grades 3–5. We are excited to be expanding this year to include a second class for K–2.
Chochmat HaLev, “Wisdom of the Heart,” is a progressive, joyful, inclusive Jewish Renewal community in Berkeley. We offer fresh, relevant, and inspiring pathways into Jewish practice through Torah, music, meditation, ritual, celebration, embodied spirituality, the arts, and the lived wisdom of our diverse community. We are a home for seekers of all ages, families, elders, children, and everyone who longs for Jewish life that is spiritually alive, intellectually rich, ethically rooted, and full of heart.
About Torat HaLev Hebrew School
Torat HaLev invites children and families into meaningful relationship with Jewish tradition through learning that is joyful, creative, embodied, and relevant. Our students explore prayer, spirituality, Torah, ritual and Jewish holidays through immersive, experiential and project-based learning.
We are looking for educators who can help children fall in love with Jewish learning and the experience of Jewish community as a sacred practice.
At Torat HaLev, we are building a learning culture grounded in accountability, gratitude, mutual care, curiosity, ritual, family connection, Hebrew as a living language, and a sense that Jewish wisdom gives us resources for engaging thoughtfully and meaningfully with life’s questions.
The Role
Torat HaLev Educators will teach Sunday classes and support select Shabbat and holiday programs throughout the school year. Educators will work collaboratively with Chochmat HaLev’s Director of Learning and Transformation to create learning experiences that are engaging, age-appropriate, spiritually alive, and grounded in Jewish knowledge.
This is a part-time position for educators who are excited to help shape a warm, inclusive, creative, and vibrant Jewish learning environment for children and families.
Responsibilities
Educators will:
- Teach Sunday morning or afternoon Torat HaLev classes during the school year
- Participate in select Shabbat and holiday programs according to Torat HaLev calendar
- Prepare creative, intentional, and developmentally appropriate lessons
- Bring Jewish holidays, rituals, stories, texts, history, prayer, and spirituality to life
- Help cultivate a classroom culture of curiosity, kindness, respect, playfulness, accountability, and belonging
- Support students in developing Jewish literacy, identity, community connection, and spiritual confidence
- Incorporate music, movement, art, storytelling, discussion, ritual, nature, meditation, chevruta, or other creative modalities when appropriate
- Create opportunities for students to ask real questions, make meaning, and connect Jewish wisdom to their own lives
- Help students experience Hebrew as a living language
- Build consistent classroom rituals, such as opening circles, blessings, reflections, gratitude practices, or other grounding structures
- Support project-based learning that gives students a sense of ownership, creativity, and contribution to the wider community
- Help connect Torat HaLev students and families to the broader life of Chochmat HaLev
- Communicate with educational leadership, parents, and families
We Are Looking For Educators Who Are
- Creative, dynamic, warm, and grounded
- Experienced teaching in Jewish education, youth education, camp, Hebrew school, day school, family education, or related settings
- Knowledgeable about Jewish holidays, rituals, history, Torah, prayer, values, and spirituality
- Comfortable teaching in a progressive, inclusive, Jewish Renewal environment
- Skilled at engaging children with different learning styles, personalities, and levels of Jewish background
- Able to create structure while leaving room for wonder, creativity, student voice, and emergent questions
- Attentive to classroom culture, relationships, and the emotional and spiritual lives of children
- Collaborative, reliable, communicative, and flexible
- Fluent in Hebrew reading
- Excited to help children and families experience Judaism as meaningful, joyful, relevant, and alive
Required Availability
Educators must be available for:
- Sunday classes (two hours) during the Torat HaLev school year
- Preparation for classes on own schedule (approximately 1 hour per week)
- Select Shabbat and holiday programs, as scheduled in the Hebrew School calendar
- Occasional preparation, planning, and team meetings
