Event Lior Tsarfaty Chanting

There is a Place-A documentary about Lior Tsarfaty

Wednesday May 24, 2017 - 8:00-9:30pm Location: Chochmat HaLev Most of you know the power and beauty of Lior Tsarfaty's music from our services and chanting classes, but you may not know about his work with Village Song, an organization that uses music to improve the lives of elder care patients. Next Wednesday evening, you are invited to a screening of a documentary about Lior and his work with elders. There Is a Place, a documentary film by Tania Ku, explores Lior's personal journey of discovering his gift of music as a young man and learning how to share this gift in all directions from that point on. Along the way, he uncovered an urgent need in the Alzheimer's and elder care facilities for his combination of music and community to lessen the loneliness, confusion, and isolation that are common effects of aging. After the short film, you will have a chance to learn more about Village Song and their work with Alzheimer's patients.

Mind on the Move Qigong

Mind on the Move with Molly Barker Mondays April 17, 24, May 1, 8, 22, 29, June 5 - 6:00-7:15pm (no class May 15) Location: Chochmat HaLev Drop-in $15 Series $84 5 class pass $60 SPACIOUS SPINE As we walk and move and sit and stand, it is possible to have a feeling of spaciousness in the spine. Space and length in the spine allows energy to flow freely to our arms and legs, enlivens our movements, improves our concentration, and lightens our load. In this seven week series we will cultivate the feeling of a spacious spine with specific awareness activities and gentle qigong exercises which encourage the spine to lengthen and open. Powered by Eventbrite Molly Barker has trained in Qigong and body mechanics with Chris Fernie, founder of the Institute for Internal Transformation, since 2008. She has studied body alignment and healthy movement, independently and with many teachers, since 2003. Currently a student in the Hanna Somatics practitioner program, Molly is also training for her teacher certification in Peter Wayne’s Eight Active Ingredients of Tai Chi. From her many years as a practicing and teaching artist, she brings to Qigong a playful and searching mind. Qigong (chi gung) is a set of movement and meditation practices originating in China. It integrates awareness of body, breath, and mind to restore health and wholeness. Hanna Somatics is a common sense mind-body training that helps release chronic tension and awaken new movement patterns.

Day Long Meditation with Norman Fischer

Sunday, June 4, 2017 - 10:00am-4:30pm Location: Chochmat HaLev Mystical Nothingness—the path to Wholeness. A day-long meditation retreat with Norman Fischer, Maggid Jhos Singer, Julie Batz and Lior Tsarfaty. All mystical traditions focus on what is simply called “Nothingness," a reality beyond the appearances of this world.  Judaism calls this state “Ayin," based in the idea that we cannot say what God is, but we can say what God is not. In this retreat we will explore “Ayin” with meditation, silent sitting, chanting, text study and dialogue as a way to embrace our own mysteries—the unknowable parts of our psyches, souls, futures, and capacity. To fully accept the no-thingness of reality is to come closer to the whole in our own lives, bring us closer to peace, strength, compassion and spiritual health. Take advantage of this day long opportunity to study, practice and learn with the gifted, compelling, and revered teacher, poet, Zen Priest and founder of Makor Or Center for Jewish meditation, Zoketsu Norman Fischer.  He will be joined by our congregational leaders Maggid Jhos Singer and Julie Batz, and musician Lior Tsarfaty. Are you looking to see if it may be possible to integrate your Judaism with where your heart is taking you? If so, then please, come join us to explore that conversation together. This monthly drop-in class will combine reading, discussion, personal reflection and meditation in the context of living into non-duality for ourselves in a Jewish context. We will examine the thought of contemporary Jewish authors such as Martin Buber, Arthur Green, Jay Michaelson, Reb Zalman and Rami Shapiro, as well as work by non-dual authors such as Pema Chodron, Ramana Maharshi, Adyashanti and others. Our practices for Jewish non-dualism will be reflection and self-inquiry based on the concepts of Tikkun Middot/Mussar. Only, open-mindedness, a willingness to share your experience, a desire to pursue the truth for yourself and the intention to transform your life are prerequisites. Open to all, no matter what your background.
