SVARA Traditionally Radical Bet Midrash

Sunday,April 29, 2018 - 10:30am-5:30pm Location: Chochmat HaLev SVARA IS BACK IN THE BAY! HAVE A FLING WITH US THIS SPRING Hey Queer Jew BAY-bes! (Get it?!) We've been pining over you since our last rendezvous, so we're coming back this April for another fling! Register now to save your spot (sliding scale $18-72) Join us for a full day of learning, SVARA-style: Talmud served up the old-fashioned way—hardcore, queer, and radically inclusive. We'll learn a complete Talmud text, start to finish, to complete memorization and with deep and total ownership. All you need to know is your alef-bet to do it! Really! Come with a friend to be your chevruta (study partner) or we’ll hook you up. Whether you’ve never learned Talmud before or you’re an advanced learner, SVARA’s bet midrash (learning community) is for you! All you need is the ability to decode your alef-bet (i.e. sound out your Hebrew letters), and you’ll be learning Talmud in the original Hebrew/Aramaic within your first hour. We guarantee it! PLEASE NOTE: The CRASH Talk is a prerequisite for learning in the SVARA Bet Midrash. Anyone who plans to attend Sunday’s day of learning and has not yet heard the CRASH Talk (in person!) should watch Benay’s ELI Crash Talk. What books do I need? We will provide you with everything you need in order to learn SVARA-style! If you have your own dictionaries for studying Talmud (A Dictionary of the Targumim, the Talmud Babli and Yerushalmi, and the Midrashic Literature, by Marcus Jastrow and The Practical Talmud Dictionary, by Yitzhak Frank) please bring them along! If you'd like to borrow these dictionaries for the day, please indicate this on your registration form. We’ll be learning from Masechet Sanhedrin, one of the tractates of the Talmud. If you have a copy…

CHOCHMAT COUNTS WEEK 5 –ETHICAL ACTION & SPIRITUAL HUMILITY

Tuesday May 1 - 7:00-9:00pm With Rabbi Lynn Gottlieb The spiritual realm of Hod is associated with the value of humility and the role of kohanot, the spiritual leaders who attend to ritual purification and ethical education. In the contemporary period, we often create a polarity between ritual purification and ethical action, but there was no such division in traditional Judaism. Understanding the dimensions of humility is critical to understanding Jewish spirituality as a fusion of ethical action and ritual prayer.  Join Rabbi Lynn for a mind bending exploration of humility that will open doors to a holistic view of Judaism. We will engage Jewish modalities of text study, sefirah meditation, dance and loving conversation. Childcare Provided with Advance Registration Register Now Powered by Eventbrite

Practicing Non-Dual Judaism Tikkun Middot Monthly Drop-in Group

Facilitated by Kevin Morgan Second Wednesday, January-June 2018  7:00-9:00 PM “Our goal should be to live life in radical amazement. ....get up in the morning and look at the world in a way that takes nothing for granted. Everything is phenomenal; everything is incredible; never treat life casually. To be spiritual is to be amazed.” ― Abraham Joshua Heschel Non-duality, the idea that everyone and everything is G-d, is part of many traditions, including Judaism. Kabbalists and early Hassidim, as well as contemporary Jewish thinkers have written much about this. Many modern Jews have pursued personal spiritual pathways that emphasize practices and an approach to living that seek to embody non-duality. This monthly drop-in class will combine reading, discussion, personal reflection and meditation in the context of living into non-duality for ourselves in a Jewish context. We will examine the thought of contemporary authors such as Martin Buber, Arthur Green, Jay Michaelson, Reb Zalman and Rami Shapiro, as well as work by Pema Chodron, Ramana Maharshi and Adyashanti. Our practices for Jewish non-dualism will be reflection and self-inquiry based on the concepts of Tikkun Middot/Mussar that the community has been engaged with. Only open-mindedness, a willingness to share your experience and a desire to transform one’s life are prerequisites. All are welcome! Free to members, $10 suggested for non-members A necessary condition for spiritual elevation is a continuous quest for a bond with the Creator.

(Rambam, Ilchot Yesodot Torah) January         Savlanut February        Chesed March                        Nedivut April               Emunah May                Kavod June               Emet
