The Joy of JEWISH DANCE with Bruce Bierman

Thursdays October 11, 18, 25, and November 1 - 10:00-11:15am Turn your morning into dance. Discover the beauty and rejuvenating force of this ancient ecstatic dance as the moves of the ancestors are tailor fit to each individual body and unique expression. Glorious Jewish World Beat and Middle East grooves are our soundtrack as the whole body gets a gentle invigorating stretch in warm-ups based on the shapes and deeper meanings of the Hebrew letters. Special time and care is taken to articulate vocabulary and gestures from the four genres of Jewish dance: Yemenite, Hasidic, Klezmer and Israel. But most of all, we experience how truly good it is to dance with others in a circle of joy. For ages 8 to 128. All backgrounds and experiences welcome! CHL Members $55, General Public $65 Bruce Bierman is a graduate of the U.C. Santa Cruz Theater Arts program and serves as a Jewish dance master, educator and theater director in the Bay Area and Los Angeles. He was a leading performer and teacher with the acclaimed Aman Folk Ensemble and completed the 2006 Karmiel Foreign Dance Teacher’s Program in Israel with an emphasis on Yemenite dance. Bruce has studied with some of the great Yiddish dance masters from New York, Poland and Israel and is a leading presenter of Jewish dance and theater for Yiddish cultural festivals. Bruce serves as director and teacher for the Stagebridge Senior Theater Company and founded NewStages--a performing arts program serving LGBT elders in Los Angeles. Powered by Eventbrite

Writing from the Heart / The Heart of Writing

A Workshop with Ruth Gendler Sunday, October 14, 2018 - 12:00pm - 3:30pm $40-60 sliding scale Whether writing fiction or poetry, essay, prayer, praise song, rant, lament, or article, writing is both work and play. Yet, many of us judge our work before we even put pen to paper, doubt our stories will be interesting, or expect perfection from first drafts. In this workshop author J. Ruth Gendler, will invite us to write from observation, imagination and wonder, to write from what we know and don't know. In the process we will reconnect with the impulse to tell stories; and focus on listening--to ourselves, to language, to each other. Ruth Gendler, a "connoisseur of questions" is a printmaker, author of three books of "lyrical nonfiction" including the bestselling The Book of Qualities, and the award winning Notes on the Need for Beauty. She has led workshops on creativity and taught writing classes for children and adults for thirty years. Powered by Eventbrite
