As we walk and move and sit and stand, it is possible to have a feeling of spaciousness in the spine. Space and length in the spine allows energy to flow freely to our arms and legs, enlivens our movements, improves our concentration, and lightens our load. In this seven week series we will cultivate the feeling of a spacious spine with specific awareness activities and gentle qigong exercises which encourage the spine to lengthen and open.
Molly Barker has trained in Qigong and body mechanics with Chris Fernie, founder of the Institute for Internal Transformation, since 2008. She has studied body alignment and healthy movement, independently and with many teachers, since 2003. Currently a student in the Hanna Somatics practitioner program, Molly is also training for her teacher certification in Peter Wayne’s Eight Active Ingredients of Tai Chi. From her many years as a practicing and teaching artist, she brings to Qigong a playful and searching mind.
Qigong (chi gung) is a set of movement and meditation practices originating in China. It integrates awareness of body, breath, and mind to restore health and wholeness.
Hanna Somatics is a common sense mind-body training that helps release chronic tension and awaken new movement patterns.
