The Chochmat HaLev Israel-Palestine Program
Orientation session: Monday, Sept. 11, 2017 – 7:00pm

Study Israel’s Legacy and the Challenges for its Future with Rabbi SaraLeya Schley
An 8-part series on the history of the State of Israel and its implications today

Free and open to the public
Dates and cost for the 8 classes TBD (to begin after the High Holidays)

Marking 50 years since the 6-Day War and 70 years since Israel’s founding, the Shalom Hartman Institute has created new curricula providing relevant approaches to the urgent moral challenges facing Jews everywhere.  Chochmat HaLev’s Rabbi Emerita, SaraLeya Schley, will guide us in the pursuit of wisdom in this customized course exploring the origins and history of the State of Israel and the ideas that shape the meaning of modern Israel, Zionism and Jewish identity today.

Explore the pivotal events of 1917,  1947 and 1967 as key moments when Zionism unleashed new meanings of Jewishness for future generations.  Other sessions look at conflicting narratives about occupation/liberation, one state/ two states, and Jerusalem. Engage in an open and pluralistic discussion about issues of Jewish identity, peoplehood, ethics, and spirituality as they relate to nationhood, sovereignty, moral red lines, and future possibilities.

All backgrounds, affiliations and perspectives welcome.
No commitment needed.

We gratefully thank the Shalom Hartman Institute for making iEngage materials available to Chochmat as part of Rabbi SaraLeya’s participation in their Rabbinic Leadership Initiative.
