New Board members to be elected for a two-year term
Recommendation from the Nominations Committee and brief biographical background.
Nancy Aron: For over 3 years I have been managing the CHL website, and I enjoy the work including building the CHL image and the closeness of its members to each other, the wider Jewish community, and beyond. I have also participated in committees such as the Chevra Kadisha, Heart to Heart, and Membership, and I am proud to have been part of the first Adult B’nei Mitzvah program. I have been a member of Kol Haneshama (an end of life support group) at the SF Jewish Home for 5 years. I believe and hope with leadership and mentoring that we can involve other members in building CHL.
Hal Aronson: I am co-founder of WE CARE Solar and the We Share Solar program, through which students learn about solar electricity by building Solar systems for un-electrified schools, orphanages and camps. I grew up in Texas, have a doctorate in Sociology, and am the father of 4 kids aged 15 to 34. I have served on multiple boards and CHL has been the spiritual home for my family for 16+ years.
Jeff Fry: I’ve been part of the Chochmat community–as a student, worshiper, community member, volunteer, and previous Board member–for 20+ years. My most recent relationship here is as the father of a daughter who adores coming to Chochmat (both tot and “big” services), and as a member of an Urban Shtetl havurah. My background is in experiential education, and I led programs for Bay Area youth for a decade. I am now blessed to lead a team of engineers at Google. I feel tremendous gratitude for all those who have previously and are currently contributing to this amazing spiritual community, and I am pleased to have the time and space in my life to return to the Board.
Jeffrey Kessler: I am 66 yrs old, a Bay Area native, and lifelong spiritual seeker, practitioner, teacher/healer. I’m from a mixed atheistic family — Jewish father, Christian mother — I have extensive experience with many spiritual traditions. I served on the Board in the early 2000s.
Dolores Leavitt: I am a clinical social worker with 40 plus years of experience mostly working in the Psychiatry Department of Jewish hospitals training clinicians. I also developed a wide variety of community mental health services. At Chochmat, I have worked diligently on the Building Committee to transform this space into a beautiful place where we can connect to the divine. I do the same thing in the various churches where we hold High Holiday Services. I previously served on the CHL Board for 6 years.
Ray MacLachlan: I am originally from Pennsylvania, and have been living in the Bay area for 38 years. I have been extensively active in Feminist and Lesbian/Gay organizations, and I have been a member of progressive Jewish congregations for 28 years. I am the Director of Security for the SF Public Library and I have 30 years experience raising children and caring for aging family members. I have served on various boards and I am committed to supporting the ongoing growth and strengthening of CHL.
Abro Sutker: Professionally I have been a therapist, a Naturopathic Physician, and a business owner working in the insurance world. I am a grandfather of 5 wonderful grandchildren. Chochmat has been my spiritual home since its inception, I was married to my wife Aliza at Chochmat. One of the reasons we moved to Berkeley was to be closer to CHL and I would be happy to be of help again. I was on the CHL Board for 5 years including as Secretary, Vice President, and then President.
Amielle Zemach: I was a founding student at UC Santa Cruz, graduated from the first professional academy of A.C.T., and got another degree from Helix Training Program as a healer-therapist. I have worked for Berkeley Unified Schools in Special Education and now for 11 years in the Library at King Middle School. While I have not been on a board before, I have founded and run small theaters and managed large productions.
